These Foods Have An Ozempic-Like Effect And Could Help You Lose Weight - Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO)

GLP-1s, or weight-loss drugs like Novo Nordisk‘s NVO Ozempic and Wegovy, are helping millions of Americans manage their weight and diabetes. But what if you could get some of the benefits of Ozempic and Wegovy just by altering your diet?

Semaglutide, the primary ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, aids patients in feeling satiated with less food intake by simulating GLP-1, a hormone naturally produced when you eat food.

One expert says that you can elicit the same effect in your body by eating a high-fiber diet.

“Whenever my family finds out that I’m studying obesity or diabetes, they say, ‘Oh, what’s the wonder drug? What do I need to take?’” Dr. Frank Duca, of the University of Arizona’s Cancer Center, said during an NPR interview. “And I say, ‘eat more fiber.’”

However, Duca emphasized the importance of sourcing your fiber correctly. Foods fortified with added fiber may not effectively curb appetite or aid in weight loss, he told NPR. Duca suggests opting for whole foods rich in fermentable fiber, such as barley, oats, and rye.

Other high-fiber foods include legumes like lentils or kidney beans, vegetables like broccoli or kale, and fruits like apples and pears. But, he said the best bet at mimicking the effects of Ozempic through your diet is by eating fermentable fibers like barley and rye.
