Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk refused to provide updates on its humanoid robot Optimus on Wednesday.
What Happened: “I think at this point, we are not ready to discuss details of the Optimus program,” Musk said while adding that periodic updates will be provided online. He was responding to a question on when Optimus will start working on gigafactory lines.
“Optimus a year ago could barely walk and now it can do yoga. So, a few years from now, it can probably do ballet,” he added.
Why It Matters: During the company’s second-quarter earnings in July, Musk said that the first Optimus that has all of the Tesla-designed actuators will be walking around November and production ramp-up will soon follow.
Sometime next year, the bots will be able to do something useful in Tesla factories, the CEO had said, while adding that he is ‘pretty confident’ about it. However, now, a quarter later, the CEO has refused any further updates.
Tesla announced the humanoid Optimus two years ago, initially aimed at performing unsafe, repetitive or boring tasks.
