Sportswear reporter Kish departs Insider

Matthew Kish

Matthew Kish, who covered sportswear companies for Insider, has left the publication after nearly two years.

“Insider employs some of the most talented journalists I know,” he wrote on LinkedIn. “It was a privilege to work alongside them. I wish the publication the best.”

He had previously been at the Portland Business Journal for 15 years, covering sportswear, banking and general assignment news for this weekly business newspaper published by American City Business Journals. His coverage of Nike has garnered national attention.

The winner of seven SABEW awards, his investigation about Oregon’s emergence as a hotbed for shell company abuse prompted the secretary of state to develop legislation to address the problem.

He has reported for the Indianapolis Business Journal and The Arizona Republic, among others. He has won multiple awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and received the 2015 Bruce Baer Award, which honors Oregon’s top journalist in a given year.

He graduated summa cum laude from Ohio Dominican College, earned a master’s degree from Reed College, and teaches news writing and reporting at the University of Portland. He has also been a Knight-Bagehot fellow at Columbia University.
