NY Times taps Michel to serve as culture editor

The New York Times has appointed Sia Michel to the post of culture editor. Since Gilbert Cruz’s departure for Books in August, she has served as interim culture editor.

Michel joined the Times in 2007 as a pop music editor. Later, she held the posts of editor of Arts & Leisure and deputy culture editor. She was the primary editor of Wesley Morris in his run to a Pulitzer Prize in criticism in 2021, then brought us a prize again in 2022 with Salamishah Tillet, reports the Times.

She was editor in chief of Spin, making her the first woman to edit a major-circulation rock magazine.
