Karen Tenenbaum, a tax attorney based in Melville, has died. She was 64.
Tenenbaum was known to many in the Long Island business community, leading seminars and helping assist clients resolve their tax problems. She supported many causes, and was an avid networker.
Tenenbaum founded Tenenbaum Law in 1996, after working as an accountant at several large accounting firms and then as a tax attorney at two law firms, according to the firm’s website. Tenenbaum Law went on to represent clients in federal and state audits, appeals, collection issues, offers in compromise, installment agreements, New York State voluntary disclosures and other matters.
Tenenbaum was a frequent speaker on IRS and New York State tax issues for numerous professional groups. Her extensive professional credentials include leadership positions with the Suffolk County Bar Association and New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, among others.
She has been recognized by many organizations and publications for her professional and community activities, including the Suffolk County Bar Association, Long Island Business News (Who’s Who Women in Professional Services, Top Women Hall of Fame, Power 25 Lawyers), Long Island Herald and Schneps Media. She has been named a Super Lawyer for 10 consecutive years and was included as one of the Top 50 Women Super Lawyers in the New York Metropolitan Area in its New York Times supplement. Tenenbaum has been quoted in Bloomberg Business News, Money Magazine, Long Island Business News, The Daily News and other publications, and will be featured in an upcoming book, Living ATHENA, by ATHENA International, a nonprofit that develops, supports and honors women leaders.
Tenenbaum received her LL.M. (Taxation) from NYU School of Law and her J.D. from Brooklyn Law School. She was admitted to the State Bar of New York and to the U.S. Tax Court.
Her passion for over 20 years has been financial and business literacy for children. She was a co-founder of Commerce Plaza, the Children’s Business Center, which has seen over 78,000 kids from local Long Island schools come through the program. She was also the inaugural chair of the financial literacy committee of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, Nassau Chapter, which has offered events and resources for the community. In addition, Girls Inc. awarded her the Strong, Smart and Savory Award for her commitment to educating youth on financial literacy.
Tenenbaum also founded Money Masters, Inc., an organization that provides financial literacy information and tools for children and parents using an animated character, Walter the Vault. Her efforts have garnered coverage by Fox 5 NY News, News 12 and other outlets.
The daughter of Shriley and Marty Weinstein, Karen Tenenbaum is survived by her husband Larry Tenenbaum. She was the mother of Allison (and Matt) Rosenzweig, and Stacie (and Jason) Dubnoff, and the grandmother of Asher, Remi, and Arley Rosenzweig and Jordan Dubnoff.
The funeral services is on Tuesday, December 26 at 2 p.m. at Star of David Memorial Chapels 1236 Wellwood Rd, in West Babylon. There is a zoom link for the service on Star of David’s website.
