Stock market open on MLK Day 2024

MLK Day is a federal holiday that honors influential civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Because it falls on a weekday this year (Monday, January 15th), you may have errands that you need to run and financial matters to take care of. The beginning of the year is often a busy time for the stock market, so you might want to make some trades on the holiday. Here’s what you need to know if you’re wondering, is the stock market closed on MLK Day 2024?

Is The Stock Market Closed on MLK Day 2024?

Is the stock market closed on MLK Day 2024? Because MLK Day is a federal holiday, the stock market will shut its doors on January 15th to observe it. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Stock Market both follow the same holiday schedule, so unfortunately you won’t be able to make any trades on MLK Day.

Since the stock market is normally closed over the weekend, you’ll have to finish up your trades on Friday, January 12th. Or if there’s no urgency, you can wait until the stock market reopens on Tuesday, January 16th.

Although the bond market follows a slightly different holiday schedule than the stock market, it will also be closed on MLK Day, so plan accordingly!

Stock Market Holiday Schedule

If you’re wondering “Is the stock market closed on MLK Day 2024?” you may also be curious about the rest of the holiday schedule. The stock market will be closed on 10 holidays this year, including:

  • New Year’s Day – Monday, January 1st
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 15th
  • Washington’s Birthday – Monday, February 19th
  • Good Friday – March 29th
  • Memorial Day – Monday, May 27th
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day – Wednesday, June 19th
  • Fourth of July – Thursday, July 4th
  • Labor Day – Monday, September 2nd
  • Thanksgiving – Thursday, November 28th
  • Christmas – Wednesday, December 25th

The stock market will also close early on three occasions in 2024: the day before the Fourth of July, Black Friday, and Christmas Eve. On these holidays, you’ll have to wrap up your trades by 1 p.m. EST.

On regular business days, the stock market is usually open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST. Remember that the markets shut down on the weekends, so you’ll have to take care of business during the week.

Bond Market Holiday Schedule

The bond market follows a slightly different holiday schedule than the stock market. It closes on the same 10 holidays that the stock market observes, plus a few additional holidays.

You can expect the bond market to be closed on Columbus Day and Veterans Day. It will also shut down early six times throughout the year at 2 p.m. EST:

  • Day before Good Friday
  • Friday before Memorial Day
  • Day before Fourth of July
  • Black Friday
  • Christmas Eve
  • New Year’s Eve

As for the regular schedule, the bond market is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST and closed on weekends.
