The Financial Times has appointed Sam Fleming as its new economics editor and Chris Giles as economics commentator.
Giles, economics editor for 19 years, will launch a new weekly newsletter on central banks, and continue to write regular opinion articles for the FT.
Fleming, Brussels bureau chief and former U.S. economics editor for the FT, will take up his new role in London in October.
“For nearly two decades, Chris has brilliantly led our coverage of global and UK economic affairs for the FT,” said FT editor in chief Roula Khalaf in a statement. “I look forward to him bringing his unrivalled expertise to our expanding coverage of central banks.
“Sam has been a fantastic Brussels bureau chief and US economics editor, and will bring great expertise as well as sound
judgement and strong leadership skills to the role. The FT enjoys a well-earned reputation around the globe for the excellence and authority of its economics reporting and commentary, and Sam is the right person to build on Chris’ legacy.”
Giles became economics editor for the Financial Times in 2004, having previously served as a leader writer. Before joining the FT, he was an economics reporter for the BBC, worked for Ofcom, the telecommunications regulator, and started his career as an economist for the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
Fleming joined the FT in 2013 to cover financial regulation. He moved to Washington in 2015 and Brussels as bureau chief in 2019.
