Divide growing over proposed casino at Nassau Hub

A divide is growing over a casino proposed for the Nassau Hub.

In an open letter, Hofstra University’s Student Government Association said it is joining the Say No to the Casino Civic Association in requesting that Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County executive, reject a proposal by Las Vegas Sands Corporation to build a casino.

Yet the proposal has support from Long Island University and Nassau Community College, which aim to partner to launch a hospitality management program with Las Vegas Sands.

Meanwhile, the letter from Hofstra’s Student Government Association was released just days after an open letter from Hofstra’s trustees, which stated that it also opposed a casino at the Hub. Hofstra’s SGA said in the letter: “We should be investing in opportunities to foster growth and development, not in an industry that can be dangerous to students and community members.”

Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Sands, according to published reports, said its “goal [is] to make this proposal a truly collaborative one that all Long Islanders can be proud of, and we are eager to continue the process and share ideas with all interested groups.”

The Nassau County Legislature is slated to vote on the proposal in April.

Blakeman has said the casino would need “the support of the community, in order to move forward,” according to published reports.

The Sands would need to win one of three downstate licenses that are anticipated in New York.
