Since ChatGPT arrived on the scene in November 2022, there’s been much renewed debate about whether artificial intelligence will replace humans.
The chatbot created by OpenAI has the ability to answer almost any question, write poetry, create flawless essays and even solve complex mathematical problems.
But not if you work in finance it seems – hot on the heels of JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs banning their employees from using ChatGPT, the Central Bank of Ireland has also restricted its staff from accessing the chatbot.
So why are so many global financial institutions cracking down on its use in the workplace? Security, loss of control over customer information and compliance issues have been cited as the main reasons why the third-party software has been banned.
The good news is that if you’re looking for a job in finance, there are no restrictions on using ChatGPT to your advantage to finesse your applications.
Help your CV stand out
Thanks to the rise of applicant tracking systems (ATS), an increasing number of companies – 98 per cent of Fortune 500 companies to be exact – are relying on software to filter job applications. ATS is programmed to automatically reject CVs that don’t contain the same keywords as the job description and failing to customise your CV accordingly means you’ll fall at the first hurdle.
Side-step any guessing games by uploading your CV to ChatGPT along with the job description of the job you’re applying for and ask it to personalise your details accordingly. You’ll have to fact check the results but you should receive a tailor-made CV that ticks all the ATS boxes.
Cover all bases
Lots of job seekers consider cover letters an afterthought but ignore them at your peril: according to Jobbio’s Hiring Intelligence Report 2022, 46 per cent of hiring managers view a well crafted cover letter as an essential component in setting yourself apart from the competition.
If writing a cover letter has never been your forte, ChatGPT can help. Simply ask it to write a cover letter for the job you’re applying for, making sure to include the job title and job description along with your personal information, and you should receive a well-written letter that touches on all the key points back.
Interview prep
While ChatGPT can’t do your interview for you, it can help you prepare the responses to classic interview questions along with any trick curveballs the hiring manager might throw in.
It can also help you understand the more technical parts of the job you’re interviewing for if you need to brush up on your technical skills or want to get additional information on software you’ve never used before.
