Sam Altman, co-founder and former CEO of OpenAI, parted ways with the company, leaving employees of both OpenAI and Microsoft in a state of disbelief.
What Happened: Microsoft’s top brass had barely a few minutes to process the news of Altman’s forced exit before it was made public on Friday afternoon, Business Insider reported.
The sudden announcement of Altman’s departure and the immediate naming of Mira Murati, the company’s CTO, as an interim replacement was made known to OpenAI’s workforce simultaneously with the rest of the tech industry.
The unexpected reshuffle in the executive suite has left employees of both OpenAI and Microsoft “completely shocked,” insiders revealed to the publication. This shock was further intensified when, an hour later, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman tendered his resignation in reaction to Altman’s exit.

Why It Matters: Despite the sudden shifts, Microsoft has declared its support for OpenAI’s new leadership. Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, affirmed in a statement, “We have a long-term agreement with OpenAI with full access to everything we need to deliver on our innovation agenda and an exciting product roadmap; and remain committed to our partnership.”
However, some insiders hinted that all might not have been smooth sailing within OpenAI’s operations, despite Microsoft’s reported backing of at least $10 billion.
The sudden departure of Altman and the subsequent resignation of Brockman has raised questions about the stability and future direction of OpenAI. Microsoft’s continued support signals confidence in the new leadership, but it remains to be seen how these changes will impact the company’s partnership with OpenAI and the broader AI industry.
