In a wave of protests demanding an Israel-Hamas ceasefire, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has called on the U.S. Capitol Police to conserve all surveillance footage and records. The demonstration took place in the Cannon House office building on Wednesday.
According to The Hill report, the protest was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and IfNotNow, with demonstrators chanting “ceasefire now” and showcasing banners echoing the same message.
In a post on X, previously known as Twitter, Greene shared a letter addressed to Capitol Police Chief John Thomas Manger, requesting the preservation of all related records from Oct. 18, 2023. She referred to the protest as an “insurrection”, disrupting legislative business and threatening the safety of Congress members, staffs, and Capitol visitors.
The Georgia Republican also urged the Committee on House Administration to probe the incident. She argued that those involved in the “insurrection” should face prosecution to the “fullest extent of the law.”
Greene called out Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) for leading the protest, labeling her a “Hamas Caucus Leader.” Reps. Tlaib and Cori Bush (D-Mo.) have previously urged the Biden administration for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Capitol Police have not confirmed the total arrests made but mentioned that three individuals have been charged with assaulting a police officer. The JVP claims that the protest saw participation from 10,000 individuals, with 500 inside the Capitol, demanding an end to the Israeli and U.S. government’s actions in Gaza.
These protests occur amidst the ongoing violent conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has already seen over 3,478 casualties in Gaza, as reported by the Gaza Health Ministry.
